Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are fixed dental prosthetic devices that are bonded onto natural teeth or implants to improve their functionality. They are the most commonly used restorative devices.

Gaps left by missing teeth are unhealthy for your oral health and lead to numerous orthodontic issues and joint disorders. Bridges are cemented onto natural teeth to close these gaps created due to tooth loss. They carry crowns which are bonded to the teeth adjacent to the gap and a replacement tooth, called a pontic, closes the gap.

Dental crowns are used to cover damaged or decayed teeth to provide protection, support, and aesthetic appeal. Crowns can fix teeth with chips, cracks, fractures, discoloration, and decay. They are also connected to dental implants and teeth that have undergone a root canal treatment in order to restore their full functionality. They are custom-made using your mouth’s impressions and snugly fit over teeth, mimicking their natural color, shape, and size. Crowns are recommended to:

  • Restore teeth that can’t be saved with dental fillings.
  • Protect teeth with weak structure from cracking and fracturing.
  • Repair a fractured or cracked tooth.
  • Hold a dental bridge in place.
  • Cover a dental implant to restore the functionality of the tooth.
  • Improve the cosmetic appeal of your smile by covering discolored teeth.
  • Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment.

How are dental crowns placed?

Crowns are placed in your mouth under the effect of a local anesthetic. The damaged tooth’s enamel is drilled to decrease its size in order to create room for the crown. If the tooth is inflicted with tooth decay, the decay is removed and the cavity is filled with a dental filling. A custom-made crown is then placed over the prepared tooth like a cap and is cemented into position.

Crowns are custom-made from impressions of your natural teeth. They match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth and blend in really well with the neighboring teeth.

How are dental bridges placed?

Bridges are also placed in your mouth under the effect of a local anesthetic. The placement is not painful but your dentist uses the anesthetic to ward off any discomfort. A bridge comprises an artificial tooth or teeth, depending on the number of missing teeth, firmly attached between two crowns. The neighboring teeth on either side of the gap left by missing teeth are filed down to create room for these crowns and the bridge is cemented into place. Once a bridge is bonded into place, it looks and functions just like natural teeth. Depending on your unique requirement, your dentist will use any of the following types of bridges to restore your smile:

  • Traditional Bridge
  • Cantilever Bridge
  • Maryland Bridge
